USS PHOENIX (SSN-702) Cold War Monument Foundation

Welcome Home Ceremony:  On 20 September 2016, a public “Welcome Home” ceremony was held at PPMR, attended by about 150 Friends of the Phoenix.  Major speakers included the State of Arizona Adjutant General and Head of the AZ National Guard, MGen Mick McGuire, Mayor of Phoenix, Greg Stanton, Former Mayor of Phoenix and Creator of the USS Phoenix Commission, Terry Goddard, and 30 year veteran submariner, RDML Mike McLaughlin, USN(ret).  Highlight of the event was a “re-christening” of the sail by the granddaughter of the boat’s original sponsor in 1979, Ms. Betty Rhodes, wife of the long-time Congressman John Rhodes of Arizona.  Ms. Amy Rhodes Marshall broke a bottle of champagne over the upper sail part, officially dedicating its continuing service as part of our monument project.

The Foundation is currently working on two major phases of the project:  developing a preliminary design for the monument; and creating a fund-raising program to raise the necessary monies to commence construction of the monument.  Next major public events planned are the ground-breaking and grand-opening ceremonies.
